Model = Whirlpool LGR4634DQ0 Problem: When the dryer is started, the drum rotates, the ignitor glows for several seconds (and then goes off), but there is no heat; i.e., it seems that there is no gas released by the gas valve. There is no buildup of lint in the vent. I've checked the Hi-Limit thermostat, and the operating thermostat, and the thermal fuse for continuity; all seem good (almost zero ohms). On the gas valve, I've checked the hold, and assist, and valve #2 coils; all have ohmage in the correct rang: 1365 ohms, 560 ohms, and 1220 ohms. I've checked the radiant sensor: it reads 0 ohms when there is no light. When I shine a strong flashlight on it, it opens after several seconds. Based on this and the fact that the ignitor goes off after several seconds, I believe that this radiant/ignitor sensor is working. So, I removed the coils from the gas valve and exposed the solenoid stems. I tried moving these stems up and down without success! Am I just a weakling or are these solenoid gas valve stems supposed to be extremely difficult to move OR are they stuck (and that's why I am not getting gas to the ignitor??? The gas valve part number is 3401775. Thanks Regards,

How long after a failure were they checked? The coils in those solenoids can fail as they heat during use but close again as soon as they have a chance to cool again. It can be difficult to test them accurately as it needs to be done at almost the exact time of failure to catch them acting up. Your symptom is most often caused by one of those solenoid coils being defective. Most technicians would replace them together. This would be my guess. Gas valves do rarely fail but if the coils don’t work you will need to replace the valve. The parts that the solenoid coils moves to open the gas valve are inside the 'stems' the coils mount on. Do NOT attempt to take the valve itself apart!

Back in business. Funny how the ohmage was in the correct range but they were still bad.

They tend to start failing during operating first. Usually with those symptoms I replace them and see if that fixes the problem. A common part for a tech to have with him.
